Medicine For Cold Sores – Not What You Expect
Recognizing that there are millions of cold sore sufferers, it is no surprise that a wide variety of medicines has emerged. Some of the better known include:
Over-The-Counter
- Carmex – Developed in the 1930s, Carmex is a topical lip balm used to relieve the symptoms. Ingredients menthol and phenol help speed healing.
- Anbesol – Made with Aloe and Vitamin E, it moisturizes the irritated area while it protects it and treats the pain.
- Orajel – Topical cream that provides moisturizing and pain relief.
- Zilactin – Gel dries to form a protective film and relieves pain.
- Lysine Cream – amino acid topical application that some have found to be effective in slowing viral growth and accelerating healing.
Prescriptions
Denavir (R) and Zovirax (R) – Both products are FDA approved for the treatment of cold sores/fever blisters and have the capability to interfere with the herpes simplex virus’ ability to replicate (produce more virus particles).
Supplements
Lysine supplement – an amino acid that is safer to take than prescription medications. It has been found to be more effective than topical application in slowing viral growth and aiding the healing process.
Vitamin & Mineral supplements – Since you immune system is the only real defense you have against viral infections, the best, but most overlooked “medicine” for cold sores, is a quality regimen of vitamins and minerals. It is the first thing you should begin to speed the healing process and shorten the outbreak duration. If continued, it can prevent or at the very least minimize the recurrence of cold sores. Certain vitamins help in particular ways.
- Vitamins B & C are important in fighting the stress that is a major cause of cold sores. They also help in healing
- Vitamin E will help heal the sores and prevent new outbreaks.
- Minerals Calcium & Zinc also heal and prevent new outbreaks.
Natural Remedies
These are a few time-tested remedies that have helped cold sore sufferers for generations.
- Hydrogen Peroxide – like alcohol, hydrogen peroxide sterilizes the wound, but in addition, it adds extra oxygen to promote healing.
- Ice – Since the Herpes Virus does not like the cold, putting ice directly to the sore inhibits the viral replication process and may even stop the outbreak if applied early enough.
- Frozen Tea Bags – this works the same as ice with the added benefit of natural antioxidants in tea aiding in the healing process.
- Garlic Oil – it is best to use the juice from fresh crushed garlic or you can cut a clove and rub it directly on the sore. Either way, the garlic attacks the virus and aids in the healing process.
- Aloe Vera – this is another remedy that is best when using fresh, live aloe vera leaves. Cut or break the leaf and apply the sap directly to the sore. Aloe has miraculous healing properties.
- Vitamin & Mineral Supplements – this one is worth repeating because it is one of the best and most effective things you can use against the recurrence of cold sores.
To find the best solution for you, will require some patience and experimentation. As I mentioned earlier, everyone it different so results will vary for each individual. These are tested and proven ways to deal with cold sore outbreaks and to limit the duration and recurrence. Be patient and you will discover what works for you!
